We are running low on creator IDs

I just tried to register 4 creator ID's and 2 of them were taken and they weren't even common ones. Pf01 (Who would take that?). Plus Palm's creator ID database dosen't include 100's of unregistered creator IDs. Personally i think palm should rethink it's file system. Whats so wrong with folders? And actual uninstallers (Instead of Deletign everything with the same creator ID.) How about a script embeded in the PRC IE:

Resource DELT 1000

delete AppFileName
open Saved Preferences
delres CREA 1
echo "Uninstallation complete."

Just simple comands like that, I would say just execute the app with a specific launch code, But that makes virus programming to easy (Delete one and get 100 more...)

Snipped from the Palm Developers Pavillion:
The Palm OS Creator ID requirements

1. A Creator ID consists of four ASCII characters. Generally, alphanumerics are chosen, but this is not a requirement. For viewability, characters are limited to ASCII 33-127 (decimal).

2. Creator IDs consisting of all lowercase letters are reserved for use by PalmSource Inc.

3. Each ID must be unique.
ASCII chars 33-127 inclusive (127-33+1)= 95 usable characters makes 95*95*95*95 = 81,450,625 total possible Creator IDs. Palm reserves 26*26*26*26 = 456,976. This leaves the rest of us 80,993,649. If even ten million creator ID's were in use there would be over 70 million available.

Creator IDs are never encountered by the end user (please correct me on this if I'm wrong) and so don't have to be sensible, or even nice.

No doubt many of the descriptive ones are already taken, but usually variations on the theme are available. For example - (just an example! No prurient interest...) the creator IDs SEXY and Sexy are already taken, but SeXy, seXy, and SEXy are available. (Get them while you can.)

But still it's a moot point if the user never sees it. Just a developer vanity issue. Palm could just as well assign them sequentially and given the developer no choice.

Your observation alarmed me and prompted me to do this research that essentially debunks what could become an urban myth harmful to Palm development.

Very nice work Mr. Slade and thanks for the informative post. Now I must rush off to grab some SeXy creator ID's, too bad we only have 4 letters to work with ;).
