Datebook Categories

A PocketC native palm library offering native forms and assorted utilities

Postby Raymond on Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:42 pm

Palm OS v5.2.1 has category support for its datebook entries. Is there any way to set and retrieve those using the DateBook access functions?
Thanks for your help.

Datebook category handling is currently not supported. PalmOne (not PalmSource) made of number of changes to the PIM app databases which it releases on it's handhelds. The T|E, T|3, Zire31, and Zire72 are the effected models. At this point I don't know what the effect of using the PToolboxLib's datebook functions on these devices (they should work, but the data may not be synced with the desktop). The great thing is that this is all going to change again for OS6. This has been quite a headache for developers. There has been little interest in the PToolbox datebook interface functionality, so I haven't bothered trying to update it (not to mention that my time is limited these days). So, at least in the short term, I don't see this functionality being added.

Thank you for your reply. Do you have any suggestions as to platform or tools that would help me?
Thanks again.

I haven't researched this, but don't know of any RAD development platform which provides a datebook interface which supports the old databook format and the new one (let alone the upcoming OS6 one).

I had to look at the OS4.0 pim app source code (which you can get from palmSource) to reverse engineer the datebook format, and there should be info in the PalmOne developers area to what thier pim database format changes were. You'll also want to see what the new Cobalt PIM interface looks like (you're longer allowed to modify the pim databases on your own! with OS6). It's a bloody mess.

In terms of a development platform I would checkout the Palm Developer Suite from PalmSource. It's a compiler and IDE for palm delelopment. It's like Codewarrior, but free! With this tool suite you have full access to the full palm SDK and do just about anything you want... though it will be more work than in a RAD environment (which offer faster development time but give users less control & functionality).
