Hello,

I want to use very small fonts like these in the RescoExplorer. Because I would not install an additional program for changing the system fonts, I use the function OpenFontDB. I tried it with an easy sample using a font from coolfonts. It works really fine, but in hi-res (320x320) the font is still so large as in the lower resolution.

Thanks, Thomas

Sorry for my bad english knowledges if somebody is laughing while reading the text ;-)

Tiny fonts are not possible with the library. The best way to draw small fonts in the palmOS is to force an offscreen buffer into thinking that it has a 160x160 density even though it really is 320x320, draw your text, force the density back to 320x320, and then copy the buffer to the screen. It's amazingly messy, and the library doesn't support doing this.

will it come anytime?
but I think that copying much text is a little bit slow. I'm thinking about creating a font-like database which 200 images (for each character one image). Then I draw each character as image behind the other. Theoretically it must work, but it would be slower than the buffer method, or?

I did create a beta quality function which does this, but never tested it enough to release it. Send me an email if you want the beta.

PocketC doesn't provide a way of changing the density of an offscreen buffer, so you can't do it in PocketC without the aid of a native library or add-in.

As you suggested, creating a bitmap alphabet would also work. Probably the trickest part would be in handling the differing widths of each bitmap.

The beta works very fine. The only problem was to create a nfnt font. I haven't found any programs which create these fonts. So I must develop one by myself ;-) I have created a font converter that converts every font to a .txt file to compile it with pilrc. I found out that there is one restriction for the nfnt fonts: The charater width can't be an odd number cause of the densities. So the missing pixels must be added to the image of the character. But it doesn't matter, the converted font looks good.
If anybody want my tool or the source, mail me to thomas.schneider@bananaware.org.
