Real edit fields

Postby Vilmos on Fri Aug 16, 2002 6:42 pm

I'd sure like to see a real edit field within PocketC itself (without custom dialogs or funky frames around it when selected.

See the Field() function in the PToolboxLib (this will install a real palmOS field).

The library also allows for:
1) you to use your own resource forms with fields,
2) real scrollbars with easy scrollbar-field bindings,
3) real repeat buttons for alternative field scrolling,
4) the installation of grafitti shift indicators for fields,
5) real menus which can utilize the standard edit grafitti shortcuts,
6) Field manipulation via numerous commands (inserting text, getting selected text, deleting text, searching, etc) See the Fctl commands 300-325).

This is true your library supports it, but I'd much prefer having PocketC support it by itself. You can fake the rest from within PocketC, but getting the popup keyboard and all the field support needs a hook to a real control, or an awful lot of extra coding -- which turns out to be too slow I tried it.

I'm not always able to use external libraries without source control. The theory is really based on dependancy, the more we control even if it isn't the best solution, the better as we can bugfix or update as necessary without relying upon outside sources.

So at times I'm stuck either going only with the core of PocketC or writing my own native library. I've done some simple stuff, but I don't think I have time to do fields. I know what is involved in using them just in a straight CodeWarrior project and it isn't pretty.

Until I can either convince my employer to change his mind, or I get some spare time, I'll just add my request for real edit fields to the wish list. I don't know how likely it is to happen, but Jeremy has surprised me before, and I'm hoping he will do it again.

I hope there is no offense to you Joe, or PToolbox, I can use it in my own stuff, although I'll admit that I tend towards habit and just go with what I know how to do already. That's the lazy programmer in me. <img src=icon_smile_sleepy.gif border=0 align=middle>

If you want fields and are doing "professional" development you really shouldn't be using PocketC. OrbForms is much better for such endeavors.

If that's truely the case, you should only be using open source development tools... that's only way to gain complete control. The two best sets out there I think are gcc/PRC-Tools/PilRC and SuperWaba/ Tauschke IDE/Jump (Java).

I would guess pretty low. To do it right involves a ton of work (believe me I know), and I suspect Jeremy will have his hands full with OrbForms for quite some time.

I bet you haven't even tried it? <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

For anything actually shipped we use CodeWarrior. For small and quick inhouse stuff though I can get away with PocketC.

Priority may not be high, but as I said it is a wish list. The fields have had some changes in recent versions, they are becoming much more usable. When I first used PocketC there was just the input dialog.

I have trried PToolbox! Honest! <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> Not recently though. I played with it for a while when you were posting the optimization tips. I was fooling with the mazes as I had been trying to get the maze generation in Pocket Dimension faster.

PToolbox will interest me more when I can get a small subset that is embeddable.
