How shareware sw manage the registration code?

Hello guys,
a general question about shareware sw. These sw require a registration code that you have to insert once you receive it. Where does this information is stored? does it create a file somewhere? hidden?

This depends on the author of the shareware.

Usually you would put the information into the registry.
