Anyone know what kind of help file this function calls, and how, or with what programme, may they be produced?

Many thanks

showhelp(string filepath) : Launch help file

[ string filepath] : a valid filepath to a help file.
Return: 1 for success, 0 for fail.

I believe it can open any standard help file. I don't see why it couldn't. And the best way to find out is to try it and see.

They (the help files) are of the ".htp" variety.

I found a nice little program that will allow you to create a help file and pocket web site and it is WYSIWYG. It is $49usd but if you are seriously needing to create a help file this is one way to get it done fairly quickly. The shareware version only allows a maximum of 5 topics. But it will give you a good idea if it is what you want.

the Help file format .htp is html based. There are some special tags to layout the help - but you definitly DO NOT need any tools! Take a look on other help files and you'll soon will figure out how it works - 99.9% of it is pure HTML...
I wouldn't pay 50?¢‚Äö¬¨ on something like that - even if it makes it easier and even if it looks nice and makes "HTML-editing" easy.

You can add a tag to separate pages in the help. So you will see a lot of pages and you will have only one help file to so (like in the help of PocketC) this tag is so:
!-- PegHelp -- hr // a comment and a horizontal bar and you must add the symbol for the tags but if i wrtie them , they will not be displayed
a name="main-content" /a // ta link with the name of the section

then call showhelp("\windows\helpfile.htc#main-content") where main-content is the name of the first page. to link to another page, don't forget to add the filename: < a href="helpfile#pagename">next page</a>

Thank you all once again, in particular for that last comment:

showhelp("\windows\helpfile.htc<b>#main-content")</b>

in particular the # bit at the end. Without it my help pages were all loading at the same time! And I couldn't figure it out in terms of HTML codes.

Justin's separator line got eaten by the web board because it is in HTML.

I've replaced all of the open triangular brackets in the rest of this post with a colon instead, so the web board doesn't eat them. Just swap them back in your real help file.

You have to include an HTML tag between sections that includes the text:

:!-- PegHelp -->:hr>

Replace the colon with an open angle bracket.

Without these tags the help program attempts to read the whole help file in one go, rather than just the section that you want. This makes it really slow.

To make sure the help is correctly integrated into Windows CE, you have to make the main contents anchor "MAIN_CONTENTS". Then if you put a shortcut to you help file in the \Windows\Help folder it will appear on the standard help menu on the start bar.

You need an HTML tag at the top of the file in the HEAD section to identify the section that will be displayed when the user clicks the "Contents" button in help. This goes:

:meta http-equiv="Content-Type" Content="MyHelp.htp#MAIN_CONTENTS">
:meta http-equiv="Htm-Help" Content="MyHelp.htp#MAIN_CONTENTS">

Again. swap the colons for open triangular brackets. (er, and the name of the help file to whatever your file is called).

The main difference between an ordinary HTML file and a help file is that the links have to include the file name, even if the link is to an anchor in the same file:

:a href="MyHelp.htp#overview">Overview:/a>

Then the actual section reads:

:!-- PegHelp -->:hr>
:a name="overview">:/a>
:h2>Overview:/h2>

:p>
About this program ...
:/p>
:!-- PegHelp -->:hr>

The help file needs to be in ASCII not in Unicode.

Would anyone be interested in future versions of PCForm coming with a help file editor? I've been thinking about doing something like that for a while.

Guy,

A help file editor would be a very nice addition to PCForm. Really we all know that good software development includes making a help file available to the user. Even if the functions in the application seem entirely intuitive to us they may not be to our end users.

Do we like makiing help files?? Hmmm from the show of hands it looks like a clear majority do not. :-)

I vote yes and thanks in advance.

just for your information about HTML:
if you want to describe HTML signs:
&lt; = <
&gt; = >
&amp; = &
&quot; = "

I wasn't certain what the web board did with html. Sometimes it seems to make sense and sometimes it doesn't. It looks like it partially parses some html and then regenerates it.

To make sure that the post went up ok I just used a substitution character. Now I know that the special characters work I'll use them.

I also recognized that the board screwed some html tags up... I don't know why. I have to say, that I didn't know the HTML codes too and had to look them up, too. I also wanted to test what the Forum would do...

I have my help file working now by placing it in the windows directory and, as suggested, a shortcut to it in the windows\help directory which includes it in the main help file. However, it doesn't seem to work properly in the obvious place to put a help file - in the windows\help directory!

Bye the way don't be put off in producing your own help file with a text editor. Most of what you might need is fairly easy, especially if you follow the tips above. Maybe best if you find one to copy and modify it to suit your needs.

Hello all!
If you want complete documentation about making help go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/wce/te ... ehelp3.asp

To show help, you can use the function:
exec("/Windows/Peghelp.exe"," /Windows/HelpFile.htm#Main_Contents") without forgetting to place the last argument (should be "open" or something like this). This works perfectly. Dont forget to place a space at the beginnig of the 2nd argument.

Since everyone is on this topic, I will brag what I did with PocketC help.

0. After hours and hours typing, I entered all of the help file into a database Access mdb.
1. Send the database to the web page, and build a user interface on the web.
2. Used a web editable program to edit the database through web browser.
3. Wrote a script that understand the database schema and generate the help file on the fly.
4. transfer the help file into daily batch build, and built into cab.

I doubt most of help file will need to be done this way. :-)
