global variables - how to?

I am stumped on how to make a variable globally accessible throughout my app (ie where do I put the declaration, what's the syntax for accessing it from another place?).
By globally accessible I mean that any form, any gadget can access this same variable. I am probably missing something obvious, can you help me?

I'm very new to this programming stuff. I have been successful declaring global variables at the beginning of the very 1st form. I also declare my function prototypes there. I then place my function prototypes at the end of the first form. This seems to work. I have written a program that writes separate databases from a single program that saves the database files as a 2 character code + a unique 4 digit code(for each user) + the 1st 4 characters of the serial number of the Palm in use. This is called from the second form using the variables declared at the beginning of the 1st form.
I hope this helps
